Assessment 29/06/11 SJA

WWW
  • Own lipsynch task is complete, with a good effort to really pronounce each word and not mumble song... although perhaps your mouth movements are a little over emphasised, have a look and try and find the right balance
  • 'What Makes a Good Music Video' post shows awareness of some key elements to focus on, but...

EBI
  • 'What Makes a Good Music Video' post could be developed further. Avoid just dumping in complete Youtube clips - try and 'select' the bits you want to demonstrate your points about 'good' music videos (an examiner won't watch the whole music video you embed, so SHOW them the bit you mean. Screen grabs would have been a better way to show this.
  • Lip Synch to 'In The Sun' missing
  • Check your spelling of key terms carefully - 'audience'
Effort - IN (You needed to have completed all 3 posts and embed your 'In The Sun' task by now...)

My expereneces with lip syncing

I think my solo lip sync task was effective at the lip syncing and the ability to match the singing with the video. However it was not as diverse as it could have been, only showing one type of shot. By doing this task I learned how to successfully lip sync and how a variety of shots are needed for a good music video.

My group lip sync task was not very effective, as we filmed snippets of the overall thing instead of the whole thing at different shots, making the editing and the syncing very hard. To improve on this we should film every different shot with the whole song so we can easily cut them all together. However this task let me experience using Final Cut software, which I had never used before, and was effective at syncing the shots with the track.

What makes a Good Music Video

  • Audience has something different to look at all the time so they don't get Viewer Fatigue. This can be the same scene or area but shot at different angles and cuts fast or slow with the music. The shots can tell a storyline if it works with the song.
  • Has to be easy to follow song though the video. If it is not in keeping with the style of the song, like having a power balled without a powerful shot of leading lady belting out the key lines with smoke and lighting from behind them, the audience do not feel happy.
  • Some sort of memorable theme or technique used. In some music videos they use a certain technique which uniquely sells the song, such as the new Katy Perry song TGIF which uses Rebbecca Black as a selling point, as she has Internet stardom of a sort.
  • Good syncing of lips to words without over-exaggerating them or mumbling though them
  • Whats on screen is appropriate to what is being sung. No rave dancing on a slow ballad etc.
